For third-year sociology major Ismael Diaz-Herrera, a little thing like no funding didn’t stop him from putting on one of MEChA de UCI’s most successful open houses to date.
On Oct. 16, students, faculty members and former Mechistas gathered at the Cross Cultural Center to kick off a new year for MEChA at their open house. Events included performances by UCI’s Ballet Folklorico, musicians from a local Santa Ana cultural center, featured speakers and various foods and beverages.
MEChA, which stands for El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan focused the night\’s events on informing and welcoming not just members of the organization but also students from all walks of life.
According to Diaz-Herrera, chair of this year’s open house, MEChA is not an organization limited to Latino students.
‘We made it a point to make this an event where everyone is welcome
