Complete with music and food samples from a number of sponsors such as Pat & Oscar’s and Hometown Buffet, approximately 5,000 people gathered at the Irvine Spectrum on Oct. 4 to participate in the 10th Annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. All proceeds from this event benefits the Orange County chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
According to Heidi Shurtleff, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, they hope this year’s walk will raise about $500,000. Last year’s walk raised close to $480,000. Shurtleff said all the proceeds from the event stay in Orange County and goes to benefit a number of Alzheimer’s Disease services such as support groups and the help line.
There were two main UC Irvine teams that participated in the walk

It is important for patients and families affected by diseases such as Alzheimer’s to consider participating in clinical studies. One such study is the ICARA Study (www.icarastudy.com), whose goal is to explore if an investigational drug, called Bapineuzumab, can help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. Clinical studies that test new treatments are the best chance we have for fighting this disease. Current therapies for Alzheimer’s treat the symptoms associated with it, not the disease itself.
