Students Concerned With Voter Apathy and Media Hype

As California anticipates the Oct. 7 gubernatorial recall election, students and other members of the UCI community are discussing the many issues surrounding the election. A primary concern for many is that the election has turned into one big media circus.
According to political science professor Louis DeSipio, while all the media hype and public attention may lesson the seriousness that many associate with the recall, the election is legitimately authorized by the state constitution and is something that cannot be easily changed.
‘I think it’s somewhat a circus, but at the same time it is sanctioned by the law and the constitution. If we wanted to change the recall, we would have to make changes in the state constitution,’ DeSipio said.
DeSipio believes that the election is of interest because it is more personality-driven
