UCI Center Chosen for Preventative Cancer Research
The National Cancer Institue has chosen UCI’s Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to test the effectiveness of new drugs for cancer prevention.
The center will initially receive $.2.2 million of NCI’s $42 million distribution to trial the cancer prevention potential of various drugs that target molecules known to exist in pre-cancerous conditions.
UCI’s center is one of only six institutions nationwide chosen to participate in conducting this testing
The UCI center currently receives a total of over $14 million to conduct similar forms of research to prevent or cure cancer.

UC Irvines Claire Trevor School Selects New Dean
The Claire Trevor School of the Arts named Nohema Fernandez its new dean, effective Nov. 1.
Fernandez started out at UCI in July 2001 as professor of music and associate dean of the arts.
She then served as interim dean of the school since July 2003 and also currently holds the Claire Trevor Dean’s Endowed Chair.
Fernandez cites her priorities as newly-appointed dean include building the school’s reputation and consequently recruiting the most talented students for success in the arts.
