The UC Irvine Women’s Tennis team scored several wins at the 2003 UC Irvine Fall Invitational on Nov. 1. The six-team event took place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.
UCI played three tough doubles matches against Loyola Marymount which resulted in two wins for the Anteaters out of the three matches played. The match scores for the doubles games for UCI vs. Loyola Marymount were 8-2, 5-8, 8-5.
On Saturday, UCI played singles matches against Northern Arizona University. These long, challenging matches were played by Anteater junior Anna Bentzer, senior Tiffany Chang, senior Christie Posner, junior Kristina Boss, sophomore Veronica Fermin and freshman Natalie Jacobs. All of them played their hardest through the cold winds and under the hot sun that day.
Bentzer won her match in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Bentzer played confident games in both her doubles and singles matches.
‘I felt well today and didn’t have any problems,’ Bentzer said.
During the game Bentzer had one goal against her opponent.
‘I was trying to keep the ball away from her as much as possible,’ Bentzer said.
Jacobs also dominated in her match with scores of 6-0, 6-0. With high hopes and a determined look on her face, Jacobs was able to pull off a big victory against her opponent.
‘I just kept playing the ball and tried not to play at her level. I just wanted to make her run for the ball,’ Jacobs said.
All throughout the matches, Head Coach Mike Edles remained very supportive of his team. He made his way from court to court talking with the girls on his team individually when they had their breaks in between sets.
He told the girls to stay competitive throughout their games.
‘We mainly try to stay competitive and to play each point one at a time,’ Edles said. ‘It’s really easy to loose your focus in competition, so we’ve been working hard on that. We want to focus on our doubles because we had all new combinations today compared to last year’s pairing in doubles so I’ve been pleased with that.’
Edles has a very optimistic outlook for his team’s future as well.
‘We’re going through a few injuries right now, but I think we’ll be in good shape because we have a veteran squad this year, mostly seniors and juniors. There’s no substitute for that kind of experience,’ Edles said. ‘And as long as we stay healthy, we should be fine and we should have a good year.’
