In our minds, we have a conception of what it means to be homeless. But often the static attitudes that make up the conception go unexplored, and in daily life we are content to think of the homeless in whatever ways we have thought of them before. Rarely do our feelings or actions change.
In the new anime film ‘Tokyo Godfathers,’ director Satoshi Kon challenges long-held assumptions by forcing us to care intensely for his characters. A far cry from the science fiction and fantasy that make up a majority of anime, this movie describes the harsh reality of being homeless in the biting cold of a Tokyo December.
Christmas morning, three homeless people are dumpster-diving to find presents for each other. The cries of an abandoned infant interrupt the festivities, and the trio find themselves saddled with the responsibility of a tiny life
