UC Irvine Police Officer Dies After Heart Attack
UC Irvine police officer Stephen Smith passed away on Jan. 6, 2004 from a heart attack that he suffered while on duty four days earlier. Smith was 47 years old.
Officer Smith came to UCI in 2001 after serving as a police officer at UC Riverside for seven years. He worked as a bike team officer and participated in several police department programs, including the annual Teddy Bear Drive, RADkids program, and Baker to Vegas UC Running team.
A memorial service will be held for Smith at the Mariners Church on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
Forum to be Held on School Safety in Orange County
The UC Irvine Center for Unconventional Security Affairs will hold a forum titled ‘School Safety: Are Schools as Safe as They Should Be?’ on Jan. 12 at 8:30 p.m. in the Beckman Center.
The forum will address challenges that schools face in a post-Columbine and post-Sept. 11 environment and also provide information on several resources and programs available to Orange County schools.
Keynote speakers for the event include Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona and Orange County Superintendent of Schools William Habermehl.
