Professor Honored by U.S. President With Career Award
Assistant professor of chemical engineering and materials science as well as electrical engineering and computer science was honored by President George W. Bush on Tuesday, May 4 with the 2002 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
Lu was among 57 recipients of the award which was established in 1996 and is regarded as one of the nation’s highest honors for scientists and engineers.
Lu received her master’s degree and doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University in 1993 and 1997, respectively. Lu currently conducts research in the field of physics.

Woman Swallows Bullet While Eating Hot Dog at Costco
Mission Viejo resident Olivia Chanes is claiming to have swallowed a bullet on Sunday afternoon after eating a hot dog bought at the concession stand in the Costco store in Irvine Spectrum.
Chanes said she had half-eaten a hit dog when she bit into the 9 mm unfired cartridge protruding from the meat.
X-rays taken at the Mission Hospital emergency room showed she had what appeared to be another bullet in her stomach.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the bullet remained in her stomach. She has been to the emergency room twice since the incident for X-rays and checkups.
