ICS Names its School in Honor of Donald Bren
UC Irvine’s School of Information and Computer Science, the first of its kind in the University of California system, will be renamed in honor of Donald Bren, chairman of the Irvine Company, after he donated $20 million to the school last December.
The donation will provide $18 million to create 10 endowed chairs for distinguished faculty.
The school will celebrate its new name and appoint its first dean in a private ceremony on June 9. The event will also mark the ground breaking for a new facility named Bren Hall, scheduled to be completed in 2006.
Rowland Elected to Membership in Royal Society
Professor of chemistry and earth systems science F. Sherwood Rowland was elected to foreign membership in the United Kingdom’s Royal Society on May 28.
Each year, six foreign members are elected to be members through a peer review process by current members.
Members will be formally inducted and honored at a ceremony in London on July 14 to 16.
Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Others in the world’s oldest scientific academy include Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking.
