A catalyst of social networking praised by students across the nation has finally come to UCI. Deserving to be called more than ‘just another Friendster,’ Thefacebook brings an entirely new level of communication and convenience to the college environment.
Found by entering the new www.thefacebook.com into your Web browser, the site provides solutions to several of the difficulties faced by college students: making friends, finding old friends and keeping in touch with all of them.
‘Thefacebook is an online directory that connects people through social networks at colleges and universities,’ said Chris Hughes, one of a five-person team that helped get the Web site off the ground. ‘Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard, had an idea in the winter of this year. He wanted to combine an idea for a universal online database with an interactive social-networking interface. After a few weeks of work and many late-night dorm room conversations with the rest of us … Thefacebook was released at Harvard.’
Currently, Thefacebook is active at over 100 campuses nationwide with further growth on the horizon.
‘We’re hoping to be at one million users by the end of the year,’ Hughes said.
One may wonder why the site is exclusive to college students from major campuses
