Professor to Help NASA Land Probes on Mars
Professor Kenneth Mease and his group of researchers from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering have been recently awarded a contract with NASA to help achieve better accuracy with Mars landings.
Mease will work with NASA researchers on this three-year project to develop an algorithm that will take into account wind drift, atmospheric conditions and parachute deployment with pinpoint accuracy.
In the past, Mars landings have landed within 20-30 feet of the target site. Researchers hope that the new algorithm for pinpoint landing will be demonstrated for a Mars mission planned for 2011.
