Professor Uncovers Mechanism that Leads to Strokes
Dr. Mark Fisher, director of the UC Irvine Stroke Center, and his colleagues found that plaques that form in the carotid artery in the neck play a vital role in forming blood clots, which can lead to stroke.
Early detection and surgical removal of the plaque can help to prevent a stroke, but until Fisher’s research, not much was known about the lesions of plaque.
Funded by the National Institutes of Health, Fisher and his researchers found that the plaques in the carotid artery form ulcerations, which collect blood that later forms the blood clots.
Astrophysicist to Use NASA Orbiter for Experiments
Gregory Benford, an astrophysicist at UC Irvine, is currently working on increasing the speed of aircraft launched into space.
In an interview with the O.C. Register, Benford explained that he would experiment with using half a megawatt of microwave energy, which would reflect off the solar sail of the spacecraft, increasing the speed of the spacecraft.
Benford has received permission from NASA to use its satellite dish on the Cosmos 1 orbiter in the month of March for his experiment.
