Anxious crowds lined the bleachers Thursday, Oct. 6 as the UC Irvine Men’s Water Polo team faced off against the Pepperdine Waves. Besides the normal jeering of the crowd and the commonplace wrangling of the players, the game ran smoothly between two well-matched competitors at the Anteaters Aquatic Complex.
The contest was a close match from the start, but ended in favor of UCI 6-5.
The game began with a quick exchange of blows, UCI responding to a power play goal by Pepperdine at 4:06 with an explosive goal 32 seconds later, courtesy of senior driver Dreason Barry. Barry, known for his long arms, only made one shot during the game, but was heavily involved on defense.
Anteater sophomore goalkeeper Matt Garcia blocked two shots during the first quarter. The score in the first quarter was largely due to the number of power plays that the Anteater team incurred as a result of personal fouls
