Fans looked at each other in disbelief, the players couldn’t believe it either and even Head Coach Pat Douglass was in awe. The first 10 minutes of the UC Irvine Men’s Basketball team’s home opener against Santa Clara University were surreal.
The Anteaters were on fire and couldn’t miss a shot.
Without showing any letdown following their upset against Stanford, UCI converted its first 13 field goal attempts of the game, 10 of them from behind the arc, and held off a late charge by Santa Clara for a 78-70 victory over the Broncos on Nov. 22 at the Bren Events Center.
Describing the opening sequences as ‘fun’ to watch, Douglass quickly pointed out that since its season-opening loss to George Mason, UCI (3-1) has found its touch.
‘We came out smoking. … that was pretty impressive,’ Douglass said. ‘But during the last few games, we’ve shot the ball pretty well.’
UCI was aware that Santa Clara was going to come into the game expecting the Anteaters to be flat after their huge victory against Stanford, previously ranked 13th nationally.
‘I’m sure they thought that, but we sure didn’t come out that way,’ Douglass said.
Added junior forward Nic Campbell, ‘That’s what we stressed during the week
