The Myth of Continuous Open Bidding

Everyone knows that recruitment happens once a year. It’s a take-it-or-leave-it offer, and if you don’t join the Greek system in the fall, you’ll be looking at another year before the opportunity again arises. It’s also a well-known fact that the best sororities complete their recruitment in the fall.
Sounds ridiculous? It is. There’s a myth permeating the non-Greek air that if one wants to get into the best chapters of the Panhellenic community, the time to join is during the fall. However, there are several problems with this fable, the biggest being that at one point or another each of the sororities has extended their recruitment beyond fall quarter.
Another is that the size of a chapter does not decide whether one is any better than another, and truly, there is no such thing as a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ sorority.
To fully understand how recruitment works in the Greek community, I sat down with Ashley Dye, director of Greek life, and learned fact from fiction. There are two types of recruitment
