After the first day of competition at the Big West Conference Multi-Events Championships, UC Irvine freshman Lauren Collins captured the second-place position. The two-day competition started Saturday, May 6, at Cal State Northridge.
Collins placed within the top 10 in each of the four events she competed in, including a winning mark of 5-7 and 1/4 in the high jump. With a time of 14.90 she placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in addition to placing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 35-3 and 1/4. Collins’ final event was the 200 meters in which she placed sixth with a time of 26.72.
The Anteaters also shined in the decathlon with three members placing within the top 10 as well. UCI was led by junior Shawn Maghzi, who left Saturday’s competition in sixth with 3,407 points after placing second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.97. Sophomore Trent Richert followed Maghzi closely and placed in seventh with 3,363 points, while junior Peter Briones placed in 10th with 3,077 points. Briones and Richert tied for fifth in 400 meters with a time of 51.51.
UCI went back into competition Sunday with five events remaining in the decathlon and only three in the heptathlon.
