On June 25, 1966, six men and five women gathered in the courtyard between the Main Library and the Commons Building to listen to a speaker. At that moment, their photo was taken. Behind them stretched a flat expanse of dirt, waist-heigh trees, winding walkways and one brutalist structure breaking the horizon. In the photograph are eleven of the fourteen people who made up UC Irvine’s first graduating class, and behind them, the beginnings of Aldrich Park.
There was only one commencement ceremony in 1965
