ASUCI Elections End in Low Turnout

In last week’s Associated Students of UC Irvine Fall 2006 election, it would appear that either UCI was not aware there was an election or did not care to participate.
Out of 20,698 students, UCI’s fall 2006 enrollment, only 621 students voted last week for their student government, a voter turnout of three percent.
ASUCI election commissioner Cina Moheimani said he believed the low voter turnout was due to students’ lack of interest in elections without student initiatives and executive board positions, which are more heavily campaigned and because of an unusually small number of candidates.
‘A lot of people took applications, almost 30, but we had only 10 candidates,’ Moheimani said. ‘That’s not much of a race.
Re-elected Engineering Representative Jeevitha Martin feels that ASUCI is somewhat responsible, saying, ‘[Low voter turnout] was due to the absence of the elections posters which would normally be displayed along the middle divider every election. But to my knowledge they have been lost.’
