Men’s B-Ball Wins in Conference Opener

Nothing came easily for the UC Irvine men’s basketball team as they edged Cal Poly 66-62 for their third straight victory and their first conference win of the season.
The back-and-forth contest saw 11 lead changes and the score tied 12 times.
UCI senior forward Nic Campbell got his stroke going in the second half and led the Anteaters to the win. He knocked down three three-pointers, none bigger than his conversion with three minutes left in the game to give the Anteaters a 59-54 lead.
‘Nic’s bucket was huge,’ said UCI Head Coach Pat Douglass. Referring to the lower-back injury that caused Campbell’s absence in the first nine games of the season, Douglass said, ‘He is still two to three weeks away from being 100 percent.’
Cal Poly would answer with a quick 6-0 run to take a 60-59 lead with less than two minutes left in the game. As the game wound down, it largely came down to the point guard play of each team.
UCI junior guard Chuma Awaji showed that he was up to the challenge. After a costly turnover with 90 seconds left and the Anteaters facing a one-point deficit, Awaji took the ball inside on two opportunities. He scored a basket on one and got to the free
