Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year Scott Gorgen is carrying his momentum into his sophomore season.
Gorgen blanked the Loyola Marymount Lions for seven innings before letting his bullpen finish the shutout, helping the UC Irvine men’s baseball team beat the Lions 2-0 in Friday night’s home opener.
Gorgen allowed only four hits and walked just one, giving LMU virtually no chance to get a run across the board.
Lions’ starter Brad Meyers pitched seven solid innings of his own but the Anteaters were able to manufacture a couple runs, which was all they needed in this night’s pitching duel.
Gorgen felt comfortable no matter how many runs the offense provided, especially at home.
‘I don’t feel any pressure,’ Gorgen said. ‘I have a solid defense playing behind me. The offense will come around, they’re a great offense. But they can be scrappy like they were tonight and still get the job done.
