Perhaps last season’s 36-24 record was encouraging for Head Coach Dave Serrano and the Anteaters; the season had the most games won since they recorded 37 in 1980. But a moral victory falls short of the aspirations Serrano has in store for 2007 club.
The Anteaters are locked and loaded with three All-Big West Conference selections returning with another year under their belt. Among them are Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year Scott Gorgen, UC Irvine’s all-time saves leader Blair Erickson and collegiate baseball preseason all-American Cody Cipriano.
Gorgen is the frontline starter to the Anteater’s new and improved rotation. He looks to follow his 2006 act after posting a 7-5 record with a 2.54 earned run average in 110 innings pitched. Freshman pitcher Daniel Bibona follows Gorgen in the rotation, although he has potential as a front-line, No. 1 starter.
Baseball America ranked Bibona as the fourth-best newcomer in the Big West after dominating at Santa Margarita High School with a 1.81 ERA and 69 strikeouts in just 46 innings. Serrano is impressed by both his ability and his makeup.
