Pop quiz: Who said the following? ‘War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.’ Karl Rove? Tony Snow? Nope. George Orwell.
Here’s another one: ‘When we talk about war, we’re really talking about peace.’ Orwell again? Good guess, but no. That would be President George W. Bush.
It should come as no surprise, then, that so many feel that Orwell’s classic ’1984′ is more relevant now than ever. It’s even made the transition from novel to stage, thanks to playwright Michael Gene Sullivan and director Tim Robbins, in a new production by the Actors’ Gang, Robbins’ theatrical troupe.
Robbins, as one of the most outspoken actors of Activist Hollywood, is a natural to tackle this sort of sociopolitical commentary
