She was walking to her car from a shopping mart in Orange when she suddenly felt a wire wrap around and cut her neck. Panicked, then-43-year-old Dawn Foor clawed at the wire but the man threw her in his car and drove up Chapman Ave. to the hills. The next seven hours would change not only her life, but the lives of hundreds.
After sun-down last Wednesday at the UC Irvine Flag Poles, Foor stood in front of an audience of 250 to 300, a survivor of rape and the keynote speaker for the event ‘Take Back the Night.’ Take Back the Night is a tradition that dates back to 1877. Originating in England, it was a protest march for women who wanted to feel safe at night. But at UCI, it is an annual candlelight vigil and a march around and through our campus to raise sexual violence awareness and commemorate sexual assault survivors.
After commencing with Foor’s keynote, the program instructed the audience to plant red flags into the lawn before the administration building and then pick up a lit candle.
10 minutes later, 3,107 flags stood in the lawn
