The UC Irvine baseball team continued to ascend through the rankings after winning two out of three games against the No. 13-ranked Cal State Fullerton Titans this weekend.
After winning two of three games at home against Long Beach last weekend, the Anteaters continued to play exceptionally well against Big West competitors. They were victorious against the Titans on Thursday (2-1) and Saturday (12-6).
The Cal State Fullerton Titans have long been regarded as the team to beat in the Big West, and UCI had not gotten the best of the Titans in a three-game series since 1980.
UCI’s frontline sophomore starter Scott Gorgen was spectacular yet again and shutdown the Titans in Thursday night’s game. Gorgen was lights-out for eight innings, striking out eight, allowing no runs and no walks. He was the victor of an enticing pitching duel versus the Titans’ highly touted starter Wes Roemer. Roemer didn’t give Gorgen much breathing room; he allowed just two runs over nine innings of work, striking out 10.
