Baseball Tops USC; Wins Series Against Gauchos: Saturday

Sadly, UCI lost a heartbreaker Saturday night. After loading the bases in the top of the ninth inning, the Anteaters were unable to drive in the tying run; they fell to Santa Barbara 6-5.
It was a tough loss to see. The offense provided three runs early on RBI hits from Sophomore Ben Orloff and Cody Cipriano and a UCSB error. However, the Gauchos quickly cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
After tacking on three more runs in the fifth inning, the Gauchos tallied on what would be the game-winning run when center fielder Chris Fox stole home in the sixth.

Baseball Tops USC; Wins Series Against Gauchos: Tuesday

UCI Holds off USC (4-3, Tuesday)
The UC Irvine baseball team played far from its potential on Tuesday night but, as they have in most close games this season, the Anteaters came out victorious.
UCI’s 4-3 triumph over USC was a critical win and much needed after losing two out of three to Cal Poly over the weekend.
Defensively, Irvine was erratic. Offensively, they were unspectacular. Nevertheless, an essential trait to all great teams is the ability to win when you’re not at your best, a trait the Anteaters were fortunate enough to exude and one that USC could not.
UCI jumped out to an early lead when senior second baseman Cody Cipriano drilled a ground ball to USC shortstop Grant Green that was too hot to handle. As the ball trickled into the outfield, sophomore Ollie Linton and junior Taylor Holiday came around to score, giving UCI a 2-0 lead.
While USC was clearly hitting the ball better than the Anteaters all night, it was also clear that the Trojans couldn’t put together consecutive hits to drive in enough base runners. UCI didn’t support its own cause by committing four errors but the Trojans managed to capitalize on just one run out of those miscues.
Freshman Cory Hamilton pitched four solid innings and held USC to just one run before turning the ball over to senior Dylan Axelrod, who has been brilliant out of the bullpen in tight games. He tossed three solid innings, allowing one unearned run.
‘Cory keeps growing up and this was a good step for him tonight,’ said UCI Head Coach Dave Serrano. ‘He has great stuff. He just needs to get his pitch count down by throwing more strikes early in the count.’
Hamilton’s start was certainly encouraging. Serrano has struggled to find a reliable third starter to follow Scott Gorgen and Wes Etheridge. Tuesday night, Hamilton showed more than glimpses of promise.
With UCI holding a 3-2 lead, it looked for some much-needed insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Luckily the Anteaters continued to get production from their hottest hitter Ollie Linton. Linton ripped his fourth triple of the season to start the frame, and was later driven in on a sacrifice grounder by sophomore Ben Orloff.
The run proved to be invaluable, as the Trojans did in fact manufacture a third run in the top of the ninth before senior closer Blair Erickson recorded the final two outs for his 11th save of the season.
‘The game is testing us, and we’re finding out how tough we are,’ Serrano said. We’re going to have to get back to playing the kind of baseball we’re used to. Right now we’re doing some uncharacteristic things, on defense, offense and our pitching.’
It’s definitely apparent that the Anteaters aren’t playing tight baseball but perhaps it’s encouraging to see that they can still defeat great clubs nevertheless. They’ve shown they can beat even the best teams when they’re on top of their game; surely it’s only a matter of time until they patch up their fundamentals.

The UC Irvine men’s baseball team pulled off a much needed series win against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Sunday afternoon after holding on for a 7-6 victory.
The Gauchos entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 7-5, but left the bases loaded.
UCI senior reliever Dylan Axelrod came in the game in the ninth with a runner on first base and one out.
Axelrod got the first batter he faced to fly out before giving up back to back singles, allowing one run to score and cutting UCI’s lead to 7-6.
With runners on first and second base, Axelrod walked Santa Barbara’s Mike Zunaich to load the bases before getting Matt Anderson to fly out to right field, ending the game.
UCI pulled away in the third inning, scoring five runs, highlighted by a bases-loaded single by senior left-fielder Matt Morris, which drove in two UCI players.
Freshman pitcher Eric Pettis recorded the win, pitching five and two-thirds innings and giving up three runs, while Axelrod recorded his fourth save of the season.
UCI’s record now stands at 28-11-1 overall and 7-5 in the Big West Conference.
The Anteaters will face Loyola Marymount on the road in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 24 before opening up a three game non-conference series at Anteater Ballpark versus UC Davis from April 27 to 29.

The Anteaters trounced the Santa Barbara Gauchos Friday night 10-5.
After trailing 4-1 heading into the fifth inning, UCI bombarded Santa Barbara with a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Senior second baseman Cody Cipriano hit his ninth home run of the season and drove in two runs on three hits. Senior outfielder Matt Morris also contributed with his fifth long ball of the season.
Starting pitcher Scott Gorgen improved his record to 7-2 with an eight-inning performance in which he allowed five runs and struck out nine. His performance was more than enough for the offense to out-slug the Gauchos Friday. Gorgen’s E.R.A now stands at 3.07.
