Baseball On Verge of Super Regional: Friday

UC Irvine recorded the program’s first Division I regional win in dominant fashion on Friday, as they obliterated Wake Forest 13-0.
Junior Wes Etheridge pitched the best game of his career, and the offense reciprocated with more than enough support.
The Anteaters’ offense exploded immediately in the top of the first inning. Junior Taylor Holiday singled to begin the game and later moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Ben Orloff. Senior Cody Cipriano followed with a base hit back up the middle, scoring Holiday. The one run was sufficient for Etheridge, but the damage was just beginning.
The domination persisted for eight more innings. Etheridge gave Wake Forest no prayer of staying in the running. In the first two innings, the Demon Deacons managed to get five runners on base, but Etheridge induced inning-ending double plays with his famous sinking fastballs. That was as close a chance as Wake Forest would have to score all afternoon.
From the third inning on, Etheridge was on his game, allowing just two hits. He finished the game pitching eight shutout innings and striking out a career-high ten batters.

UCI Leading Texas 6-5, Sunday
The UC Irvine baseball team is currently six outs away from advancing to the NCAA Super Regional.
The Anteaters led the University of Texas 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday night before the game was postponed due to rain.
The game will be postponed until Monday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
With a win, UCI (2-0 in the playoffs) will advance to the Super Regional.
Texas (2-1) cannot afford to lose as two loses eliminates a team from the playoffs.
If UCI looses on Monday morning, both teams will match up again in the afternoon for a sudden death game.
In the game on Sunday, UCI trailed 1-0 after the second inning but quickly answered.
In the bottom of the third inning, senior second baseman Cody Cipriano drove in two runs with an RBI double to give the Anteaters a 2-1 lead. Junior Matt Morris gave himself up on a sacrifice bunt to score another teammate to give UCI a 3-1 lead.
Texas, facing elimination with a loss, tied the game in the fourth inning and later took a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning off UCI freshman pitcher Eric Pettis.
UCI responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs, to take a 6-5 lead.
Junior right fielder Brian Peterson and freshman designated hitter Jeff Cusick each had RBI hits to tie the game at five.
Junior catcher Aaron Lowenstein then grounded out to second, allowing Cusick to score from third, giving the Anteaters the 6-5 lead.

Baseball On Verge of Super Regional: Saturday

The UC Irvine Anteaters made things very interesting in Round Rock, Texas this weekend. UCI’s baseball team upset the University of Texas 3-1 on Saturday, moving it one win away from the Super Regional Playoffs.
Scott Gorgen was as incredible as anyone could have expected against a potent Texas offense. Gorgen went the distance for the third straight time; it was his fifth complete game of the season.
In the bottom of the third inning, Gorgen surrendered a solo home run to Texas’ Bradley Suttle. However, the home run seemed to provide Gorgen, rather than the Longhorn hitters, with a rush of momentum.
Following the home run, Gorgen allowed just two hits and the rest was up to the Anteater offense.
UCI went to work right away, as it did on Friday. Taylor Holiday crushed a triple to center field to lead off the game. A few pitches later, sophomore Ben Orloff singled him home with a base hit to left field. Holiday’s triple extended his hitting streak to 19 games, the longest of any player since the program was brought back in 2002.
In the top of the third, Holiday reached base again to lead off the inning, this time on a throwing error by shortstop Chais Fuller. As he does so often, Orloff laid down a flawless sacrifice bunt to advance Holiday to second. Senior Cody Cipriano followed with a single, moving Holiday ninety feet from home.
With runners on the corners, Senior Matt Morris laid down a bunt up the first base line, scoring Holiday and regaining the lead 2-1.
The Anteaters granted Gorgen an insurance run in the seventh, courtesy of none other than Holiday. He ripped an RBI double down the right field line, scoring senior Aaron Lowenstein.
But Gorgen wouldn’t need it, as he held the Longhorns to their lone run and improved his record to 11-2.
‘When I went out there [to the mound], I reminded him we’ve been in clutch positions before
