Sixth-ranked UC Irvine defeated the eighth ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 8-7 on Thursday, but UCI was unable to upset third-ranked UCLA Saturday night.
In their home-opener Thursday, the Anteaters were in control all night; not once did they surrender the lead. Senior two-meter Tim Hutten frustrated the Gauchos all night as he scored four goals. Last year’s leading scorer, senior driver Colin Melo, added two goals of his own.
On the surface, the score seems to indicate that the Anteaters pulled out a close game, but that was hardly the case. UCI outscored the Gauchos in every period, and the Anteaters all but let UCSB score its final goal with 12 seconds remaining.
Thursday night’s victory had the kind of ending that UCI fans wanted to see
