While bigwig Native-American casinos tell California voters that we should show support by giving them more slot machines, UC Irvine economics professor Richard McKenzie is suggesting that we up the ante to take control of our feeding habits.
In ‘Dieting for Dollars,’ an opinion piece published recently by The Wall Street Journal, McKenzie explains how, after trying to lose 10 pounds, he was without success. That changed when he placed a bet with a buddy that if he didn’t lose nine pounds in 10 weeks, he would pay her $500.
The wager made the admittedly high cost of leading a healthy lifestyle seem like a good investment. For example, the article stated, ‘I joined a gym, perfectly happy to pay the steep rates. Why?
