In their first competitive action since the College World Series last year, the Anteaters showed off a preview of what will be in store for the 2008 squad.
Twenty days away from its first game of the season, UC Irvine played a seven-inning intra-squad game Saturday morning, followed by an intra-squad game featuring UCI baseball alumni in the afternoon.
Sophomore Cory Hamilton and redshirt sophomore Bryce Stowell were the starting pitchers in the morning game. There was no official scorekeeping, but both pitchers prevented the game from being an offensive duel.
Stowell, who replaced last year’s star Wes Etheridge as UCI’s Saturday-night starter, was as sharp as advertised. After sitting out last year due to transfer issues, Stowell gave every indication that he can give UCI a legitimate chance to win each time he takes the mound.
His command was sharp throughout the five innings he worked, but it was the late break on his curveball that was most encouraging.
