Anteaters pull off two important wins in a double-header.
The UC Irvine women’s water polo team played a victorious double-header on Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex, hosting the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and the California State University Baptist Lancers. The ‘Eaters beat UCSB in a Big West conference game in double overtime 11-10. The game was a success with seven players scoring for UCI and goalkeeper Lauren Davis making 11 saves.

The Anteaters were up 6-4 and maintained the lead going into the fourth period at 9-6, until the Gauchos tied it up with under four minutes on the clock. Sophomore Courtney Collyer scored in the first overtime period, giving the ‘Eaters the lead until UCSB scored in the last minute of the period. The game went into a second overtime period where the Anteaters took the lead when junior Erin Keine scored the game-winning goal.

On Saturday evening the Anteaters took on California Baptist for their second win of the day, beating the Lancers 11-6. Senior Gianna Rossi lead the Anteaters with four goals, helping toward a 7-0 lead going into halftime. The Lancers came back with three goals in the third period and another three in the first minutes of the fourth quarter. The ‘Eaters scored four goals in the second half, including two in the beginning of the third period, and two in the last five minutes of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Vickers had eight saves against Cal Baptist while juniors Erin Kiene and Kat Plummer each scored two goals for the Anteaters.

Head Coach Dan Klatt was pleased with the team’s wins.

“This morning we dominated the game but shot really poorly. There were easy opportunities that we didn’t finish, but we got the win,” Coach Klatt said. “It was nice to come back and win again tonight, and we had the opportunity to play everyone on the team, which was great as the season is coming to an end.”

This brings the Anteaters record to a very impressive 19-8 overall and perfect 3-0 in Big West Action. The Anteaters will attempt to continue their impressive start when they travel to California State University, Long Beach this week.
