Samier, thank you for an article that is right on the money. It realistically suggests how bleak art scene really is and therefore how unlikely it is that it may improve. My main takeaway is that liberals don't have power because they lack organization, while extremists hold violent organization on their side. Naturally, it gives them the upper hand.
I'm writing because I"m a musician (originally from Multan) working and collaborating in Philadelphia/New York City, did my undergrad/masters here. I am fortunate to have a group of friends, including Pakistanis in Ivy league institutions and well known firms, who through their experiences have managed to go beyond the indoctrination of race and religion that is commonplace in a Pakistani upbringing. Moreover, unlike most 'liberated pakistanis wanting to fix Pakistan', such individuals are interested in world culture and are more interested in finding their place in humanity as opposed to narrower identities.
I have experience in Business and Music, and a thriving network with academic institutions and companies in USA, and I have a few projects in mind to bring Pakistani culture/art outside the 'basement' using musicianship, marketing, and an expanding network of influential people. Perhaps it can also be utilized to help displaced refugees in Waziristan etc. Please contact me, as you are on the same page.
