America in the power shift to G20

U.S. President Barack Obama is right saying that the world cannot meet the challenges of the 21st century with 20th-century approaches.

Leaders of the G20 countries announced Friday they'll strip the G8 of its role as the world's primary decision-making body on economic issues. The global economic structure is now undergoing a historic transfer of power to the developing world. China, India Russia and Brazil will play a bigger role in a new global structure. The G20 replaces the G8 as the main forum for steering the global economy.

A brave new world?

The G20 has long been a lower-level forum for finance ministers. Its members will share the power at the IMF and the World Bank. The question is why G20 should take the lead in building a new approach to cooperation? G8 members always put their interest first. Why a larger group of dominant economies has to do something else? In the actual world setting there are no direct link between enhanced role and more responsibilities. Like in the recent event of this nature, the rhetoric did not match reality. For the third straight meeting, the G20 countries promised to resist demand to erect protectionist trade barriers wile each of its members do the opposite on an individual basis. Like in the past, the new world-economic structure will let rich countries run with the money without having to pay for the poor ones.

We all live in America

Like Canada, United States is going to be very much affected by what happen in the rest of the world. To maintain America influence in the G20, United States relation with Canada will have to be enhanced. The trade relationship between the two countries is already the biggest in the world. Canada is by far the largest supplier of energy to the United States. There is an important security issue in a world with nuclear power extending at fast pace. Terrorism plots uncovered in the past years show that Canada border is absolutely no protection against terrorism in the United-States. To name few, Syed Haaris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee convicted of conspiracy against the United-States in June 2009 went to Canada to meet with co-conspirators and made videos to send to extremist groups. Terror suspect Najibullah Zazi allegedly planned on unleashing a terrorist attack on New York City on the anniversary of September 11th traveled back and forth to Canada. The integration will have to be politic and territorial if America wants to keep safe and a dominant role in the new economy.
