Put a cat in a bumblebee suit and one person finds it hilarious, while another person thinks it’s animal cruelty. What’s funny? Isn’t having a sense of humor sort of a subjective thing anyway?
It seems as if almost every year the horror film industry puts out another remake to be pitted against the original. The two most recent remakes have been of the classic slasher film “House on Sorority Row,” and the upcoming remake of the horror film classic “Mother’s Day”. Thus, in light of these two remakes, the questions of how horror films has evolved in the past decades, and whether it is evolving in the right direction circulate the industry.
Roman Polanski’s internationally publicized arrest at a Switzerland airport stirred up the dregs of his past. It has taken over three decades for Polanski, the Oscar-winning director of Chinatown and the Pianist, to be arrested for the 1977 drugging and rape of a 13-year-old girl.
At a time when budget cuts and teacher layoffs are hurting students and teachers alike, the Obama administration is straining an already vulnerable school system by trying to add hours to the school day while lengthening the school year and shortening summer break.
Among the many terms that should be considered cliché and overused, “selling out” is a phrase that is often abused by vindictive and selfish music fans. Bands are frequently labeled “sell-outs,” because their original fan base felt they became too famous. More often than not, this tends to be an inaccurate accusation. Not every famous band betrayed their fans and their principles for fortune and fame.
The revelation that Iran has been secretly building an underground uranium enrichment facility may have raised expectations that last Thursday’s meeting in Geneva would be a showdown between the United States and Iran. However, the meeting between Iran’s nuclear negotiator and representatives of the United States, China and Russia is more likely to be the beginning of a dialogue that will continue for months to come. Whether this dialogue will result in anything is yet to be seen.
It’s tough not to feel at least a little sorry for Mark Yudof these days. The current President of the UC system has become something of a scapegoat, taking the brunt of the blame for everything going wrong.
