We need to continue seeing more pieces like this to share with the community what it really sacrificed when volunteering for service. I applaud the author for writing about something extremely personal and emotional; even though he doesn't share the full emotions behind a military deployment, the ones that are shared in this piece are vivid enough to let readers know deployments are far from easy.

I hope the paper will keep up the support of our troops, regardless of their thoughts on the war, by publishing more features like this. Thank you, Jason, for your brave service both as a soldier and as a journalist. Hooah!

Thank you, everyone, for the encouraging words. I'll add as much story as you and the editors can handle.

Nice work, Jason. That moment certainly divides life into a 'before' and 'after.'

Really well written, I kept seeing the scenes of the Air Cavalry's deployment in the movie "We Were Soldiers" while reading it.
I was still in HS when this happened, but I remembered watching all of it on CNN through the "embedded reporters." And I think there was a reporter that was with the 101st reporting live on CNN during the push to Baghdad.

Utmost thanks for your service.

Thanks Jason Davis about writing an article about your experiences before deployment, and the uncertainty and the stark detail of everything going on. I hope to see more articles about what happened later in your deployment.

Beautifully written. I've been in the your wife's shoes. I'll never, ever forget the night my husband left for war. Reading of it from the warrior's perspective gave me the shivers. now that's what I call reaching the reader. Well done!
