The author doesn't understand economics. Actually, Kobe is worth more than 23 million dollars. That's why the NBA has a salary cap. Back in the day when there was a different salary cap, Jordan got 30 million dollars a year. That's well worth 50 million today. In terms of the money that these players generate, they are underpaid. Think about it: television deals, jersey sales, ball-game tickets, youtube revenues, storylines for the media, advertisements, millions of guys in China buying basketballs and jerseys and inspired to play (aka become customers of the basketball industry)...it's a booming industry that is helping support our economy. Remember the championship parade? That's spending in a day that helped our economy. It even gave private business owners a chance to give back to the community when they helped the city of Los Angeles pay for the parade. Look at the smiles on the faces of the Lakers owner. There is not a team in the league that would hesitate to pay 23 million a year for Kobe. That's chump change in terms of the benefits. Any person with an economics sense would see that.
