Valentine’s Day is finally here! For those of you lusty anteaters who have someone to share it with, you’ve got some serious planning to do.
While you might think tossing a bouquet of roses and a teddy bear together is enough to make your night special, think again. Quickies are one thing but when it’s an all night love-a-thon you’re after, you’ll need biology on your side to keep up the pace. Putting just a little thought into your after-dinner liaisons can help make this V-day one of your most memorable yet.
Adding some aphrodisiacs to your Valentine’s Day meal is one way to spice things up at the dinner table and, not to mention, in the bedroom. So make sure to cook up (or order) the sexiest meal you can dream of by incorporating as many aphrodisiacs into your recipes as possible. Just talking about increasing your libidos will keep your mind on topic through preparation, dinner and dessert — and hey, you might not even make it through dinner without a test-break!
Life Love and Lust’s guide to Valentine’s Day aphrodisiacs will help you decide which are fact and which are fiction.
Oysters. Probably the food you think of first when the word “aphrodisiac” pops up, oysters have quite the reputation for being sexually stimulating. One reason they’ve commanded the rep is because of their high zinc content which is known to increase libido and help sperm production. Served with a glass of chilled champagne, raw oysters just might be your romantic deal-sealer.
Avocado. Said to boost the immune system with folic acid, vitamin B and potassium, this treat is also known for its testicle-resemblance while growing in pairs on trees. Add them to a pre-dinner salad, mix up some guacamole, or slice them up and sprinkle on some salt to eat them by themselves.
Garlic. Definitely not the most oft-recommended date food, garlic is known for its high-levels of allicin, a chemical that increases blood flow — which means it’ll get it flowing to your…necessary bits. You can chop up some garlic and throw it in pretty much anything you’re cooking up, but make sure to pick up some Altoids and Listerine while you’re shopping for ingredients.
Asparagus. These sexy spears aren’t just known for their phallic shape, they’re loaded with potassium, fiber, thiamin, folic acid, and vitamins B6, A and C. Folic acid is said to rev up the histamine production necessary for both men and women to achieve an orgasm. You can easily work these into an appetizer or main course, but just snacking on these treats is suggestive enough!
Ginger or Chili. Both ginger and chili warm up the body and increase the heart rate, mimicking the way the body feels during sex and helps to conjure up reminders. Ginger works in both deserts and in oriental cooking recipes, while with chili you can sprinkle on just about anything to spice it up a bit.
Alcohol. While you might feel that alcohol is your most sexually-convincing beverage, you’re in for a surprise. Alcohol actually doesn’t offer any aphrodisiac qualities at all. What alcohol does is lower your inhibitions and raises your level of irrationality so you’re more open to spontaneity. A few drinks can be fun, but pushing the limit will actually start to decrease your libido and ability to orgasm. Share a few glasses of champagne but avoid getting trashed for the sake of your late night love fest.
Basil. Basil adds a wonderful smell and taste to your meal — and it just might bring out the sexy Italian in you! The aroma itself is said to have an aphrodisiac effect and is known to stimulate the senses. Toss together a caprese salad or add some basil to a simple pasta sauce to get your heart pumping with this sensual herb.
Almonds. If nothing else, they’re rumored to be suggestive of the female shape. Their aroma is supposed to arouse passion in women and scientists say that they also give a boost of vitamin E, magnesium and fiber. Nab yourself some of these nuts as an afternoon snack to get prepped for the night ahead.
Honey. Honey contains a mineral called boron, which is known to help the female body use and metabolize the hormone estrogen. Some studies have shown that boron can also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, which promotes sex drive and orgasms in both men and women. While it might be a little messy, you can smother honey over everything — including your partner!
Chocolate. There’s some disagreement over whether or not chocolate is actually an aphrodisiac. It’s a bit like sex, in that it make you feel pretty good and it’s got both phenylethylamine (PEA) and serotonin which are two chemicals that light up the pleasure areas in the brain. PEA is a chemical that occurs naturally in the body, it peaks during orgasm and administering it can increase feelings of giddiness and excitement, but there haven’t been any conclusive studies categorizing chocolate as an aphrodisiac. It can’t hurt to incorporate a little chocolate into your night … just don’t try pronouncing phenylethylamine after a few glasses of champagne.
Fruit and berries. Last but not least — and often recommended as a homeopathic remedy to bedroom maladies — berries and fruits can help ramp up your sexual activity on special nights like Valentine’s Day. Bananas are known for their phallic feel, so add that to your platter of bedroom fruits when you’re just about ready to go.
Other fruits, like pineapples, are better sliced up. Cut up and throw together a bunch of your favorite fruits and enjoy these sweet and juicy delectables by feeding them to your partner by hand.
Berries are even simpler to enjoy since you don’t have to bother cutting them — as a Valentine’s Day finale — pop five (or ten!) raspberries onto your partner’s fingers and suck them off, one by one.
