Women’s Basketball Clinches Big West Tournament Birth, Side Step Matadors

The UC Irvine women’s basketball squad blew out Cal State Northridge, 82-65, at the Matadome last Saturday. UCI was helped by a big first half outburst that saw them score a season-high 46 points. The 17-point margin of victory is the largest of the year and the 82 points is the second most scored by UCI this season.

UCI was able to get many contributions from different players in its most dominating win of the year. Mikah Maly-Karros dropped 20 points in 22 minutes of play, going from the free throw line. Senior guard Rebecca Maessen added 14 points, while Jade Smith-Williams contributed 13 points and Keyonna Johnson dropped 11 pints on the Matadors.

With the win, UCI clinched a spot in the Big West Tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center on March 10-13. UCI improved its overall record to 9-18 and 6-8 in Big West play. The Anteaters will next take on UC Santa Barbara at home on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Women’s Water Polo Struggles in UC Irvine Invitational, Finishes 12th

On Feb. 27, UCI lost their first game to Hawaii 11-7 before beating UC Davis 9-8. On Feb. 28, UCI moved over to Corona del Mar High School’s pool and lost to Loyola Marymount 11-10 in overtime. UCI lost to UCSB 11-3 in the 11th place match to conclude the tournament.
