This article should be under the 'Opinion' section. There's horrible bias in this "news" piece.

As a professor, Block should know that correlation is not causation.

Secondly, new students and faculty have nothing to fear because CCW permit holders are going to keep to themselves, not hand out pistols like candy. But if they're really concerned, maybe we should have firearms education like the way we have sex education. Cooper's Rules are easy to learn and infallible.

Thirdly, only someone who has never fired a gun would say they are "extremely dangerous and sensitive". Gun accidents are extremely rare. The example you cited was a high schooler, who cannot legally purchase a handgun (strike #1), who brought the gun illegally to school (strike #2), and threw the gun in his backpack rather than using a proper holster than any CCW permit holder would use (strike #3! You're outta there!).

Fourthly, Zamudio, the armed citizen in AZ, didn't shoot the wrong person. Almost, could have, was about to, those hypothetical scenarios didn't happen. The reality is that he helped stop the actual killer. He exercised proper discipline showing that, in fact, CCW permit holders can discern who the bad guy is just fine.

Finally, the fact is, none of the above really matters. You treat CCW on campus as if UCI will open an office and start handing out permits and pistols. This is wrong. No one is being forced to carry a gun. These laws will allow people who ALREADY have CCW permits and ALREADY carry concealed guns every day to carry on campus. If these people can already be trusted to carry a gun everywhere else, then carrying on campus is no big deal.

I see comments like, "I would feel uncomfortable knowing that a student can carry a pistol in class", "College is a place for higher learning", etc. THERE IS NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF. If you've ever gone out in public, watched a movie, jogged in the park, chances are, you've walked past a CCW permit holder at least once. Did you scream out to the high heavens? No, because you didn't even notice. That's exactly the way it'll be if CCW is allowed on campus. Out of sight, out of mind.
