Luis,

I wasn't comparing UCI with Florida, but merely using Florida as another example of how much home runs have dropped off in recent years. UCI and Florida are completely separate and should be treated as so, but both teams had considerably less home runs in 2011. UCI plays in a pitcher's park that has become even more of a pitcher's park with the new bat standards.

By no means was I saying that UCI is struggling, but commenting that in order to take the next step and compete for a national championship, Coach Gillespie might want to look towards speed. Like you said, UCI isn't "afraid to bunt & hit and run," so why not hit and run with speed instead of players who can't leg out a dribbler?

UCI had a great run in 2011, just like recent years, but in order to get over the hump, speed might be the way to do it. The Anteaters always pitch well and are defensively sound, but the home run totals are down in college baseball, so speed looks like it's the way to go.

Thanks for taking an interest and I appreciate your thoughts.

You cannot compare HR's between Florida & UCI because the difference of weather. In Irvine the ball does not fly as much as the it does in the humid air of Florida and also Florida considerably has shorter fence than us. When you compare HR's between schools in the west coast and the SEC you will always see a significant difference of HR's. Also Skip loves to play for 1-run games hence his small ball style of play. He's not afraid to bunt & hit and run. Lets not forget that we are 1 of a handful of teams on the West that has gone to a regional CONSECUTIVELY since 2007.
