It was a simple enough question [...]

Wax: When in Brazil, Do as Brazilians Do (But Don’t Look!)

She was pretty, with cocoa-brown skin, what Brazilians, with their arsenal of racial classifications, might describe as “coffee with milk.” Her small afro was tied back with a headband, revealing a kind face and sympathetic eyes. She was standing in the small, warm room with what to most would have seemed like a welcoming smile. [...]

Bringing Democracy Back

Bringing Democracy Back

“Do you support Democratizing Education?” Various forms of this phrase were scrawled across the ground in chalk and on posters along Ring Road early last Monday morning on the first day of winter quarter. By noon, some of the posters had disappeared and footsteps had carried away most of the chalk. But by then this [...]

ASUCI kicked off its annual Wayzgoose Medieval Faire in Aldrich Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday. In collaboration with Celebrate UCI, Wayzgoose is an opportunity for incoming freshmen to get a taste of the many extracurricular activities the campus has to offer. The park remained packed throughout the day, which couldn’t have been better for a festival as there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

Read. Realize. Resolve Racism.

Imagine this. You wake up in the middle of the night to use the restroom you share with your suitemates. In the morning, a friend stops by to show you a picture on his digital camera. It’s a picture of the white board on your door. However, instead of the usual funny pictures and inside jokes from hallmates and visiting friends, scrawled across the board is the word “NIGGER.” Trying to spare you the embarrassment, your friend erased the hateful word before more people could see it.
