Derelicte: Trashy Clothes Are So in Right Now
In the movie “Zoolander,” fictional fashion guru Mugatu focuses his entire clothing line around the homeless. His new “Derelicte” campaign boasts women in trash bag couture, black eye shadow like soot smeared across their faces. Mugatu’s superficial embrace of homeless culture provides a satirical look at fashion’s relentless search for edginess, for fashion that [...]
Happy 2010! The New Year From A to Z
For whatever reason, we humans have an odd habit of investing certain arbitrary dates with great significance: birthdays, anniversaries and, of course, New Year’s Day. This is because the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one offers the sense, however delusional, of renewal and of a fresh start. So in honor of 2010, the New University’s editorial staff picks 26 stories to watch for during the new year.
Searching for a Vaccine Against Misinformation
“Might hurt just a little bit — just a little bit — but it’s going to help a lot!”
That is a line from a song that Sid the Science Kid and his computer-generated pals sang on a recent episode of Sid’s eponymous public television children’s show. In every episode, Sid has a “Super-duper-ooper-schmooper” big idea. Last week, on a show entitled “Getting a Shot: You Can Do It,” Sid’s big idea was that getting vaccinated is a good idea.
Regents! We Do Need Some Education!
UC students everywhere are feeling the pressure after the UC Board of Regents approved a 32 percent fee increase on student fees last Thursday. This vote will make it even more difficult for students currently struggling to make ends meet to get the quality education they expect from the University of California, quality that has been called into question.

Happy 40th Birthday, Sesame Street!
“Sunny day, everything’s A-OK…”
Who among us can hear these optimistic words without being transported back to a simpler time? A time of learning the alphabet, counting along to catchy tune, loving milk and cookie, and the monsters that devour them? For 40 years, the average childhood has been tinted with the rosy hues of “Sesame Street.”
Three Strikes and You’re Out of Luck
“Three strikes” is not just associated with the sport of baseball. “Three strikes laws” are also statutes enacted by state governments. They require state courts to hand down a mandatory and extended period of incarceration to people who have been convicted of a serious offense on three or more separate occasions. In California, the three strikes law, enacted in 1994, makes the punishment for committing the third strike a 25 years to life sentence in jail.
Halloween: The Least of Your Worries
If you are anything like the average college student, you probably have not been scared of Halloween for a while. Sometimes you miss the holiday of your childhood. There was free candy and scary movies that left you genuinely afraid to go to bed for weeks. You ran away screaming from your neighbor’s porch on October 31st because they had one of those motion-sensor moving vampires/zombies/witches/(insert Halloween cliché here)s.
Apocalypse Now: Rain Hits SoCal
Rain, rain go away. Come again some other day. Or never. Seriously, we can’t handle it.
All across UC Irvine’s campus last Wednesday, exasperated and confused students could be heard cursing the rain and asking how it could possibly be so cold. Perhaps the fact that it’s now mid-October and Winter is around the corner has something to do with the answer.
