If the ADD-inducing bonanza of frenetic editing, style-over-substance imagery, confusing symbolism and sexual implication that make up the stereotypical MTV music video has been influenced at all by the movie industry at large, at least one such influence can be found in a very unlikely place: the work of the late Russian master of silent cinema, Sergei Eisenstein. An entire generation used to seeing relentless montages of strange images and all-too-quick camera cuts owes a great deal
