Is it Just Me, Or Is There Major B.S. Going on Here at UCI?

Social ecology majors are just a bunch of simple-minded slackers. Well, not really. I’m one, and I think I deserve a little more credit than that. But judging by the fact that we’re treated like second-class citizens, one would be inclined to agree with such a suggestion.
This is what I came to believe after my first quarter at UCI last year. Little did I know, I was now living in a world where saying ‘I’m a crim major’ was like admitting that I still like to wear Superman underoos every once in a while to mix things up. The admission carries enough weight to stifle the smile of even the most interested prospect.
But that’s another story for another time. The entire experience has been frustrating to me because with the simple divulgence of my major I open the door to assumptions of laziness, condescending tones and a barrage of stereotypes claiming the inferiority of humanities, social science and social ecology majors.
When telling others of my major I’ve come to expect reactions like, ‘Oh, right on
