AFSCME Workers Ratify New Labor Contract With UC
UC service workers recently voted to accept a new contract that, among other provisions, establishes a $9 minimum wage that will affect 600 workers, giving them an additional $250 retroactively for the fiscal year ending June 30 and increased pay on nights and weekends.
The contract was approved by 87 percent of voting members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
The agreement came shortly after a one-day strike held on April 14, during which service workers and supporters from the UC community formed picket lines to demand better treatment.
Stage Director to Join Claire Trevor Faculty
On May 10, UC Irvine named stage director, Bill Rauch, a Claire Trevor School of the Arts professor of drama.
Rauch was the artistic director and co-founder of the Cornerstone Theater Company, a Los Angeles-based performing company that uses theater as a tool for community-building. The company casts local residents and professional actors and adapts classical plays to reflect contemporary issues in hopes of promoting dialogue between diverse communities.
Rauch’s appointment is effective on July 1, 2005 and Rauch plans on leaving the Cornerstone Theater Company by the end of March 2006.
