Los Angeles Historians Celebrate UCI’s Mike Davis
Last Tuesday, a discussion called ‘The New City of Quartz: Mike Davis and Los Angeles,’ was held for the new edition of ‘The City of Quartz,’ a controversial book about the history of Los Angeles, which was first published in 1990. The author, UC Irvine history professor Mike Davis, answered questions after a panel of renowned Los Angeles historians shared their reviews about Davis’ influential work.
The event was presented by the UCI Department of History, the Humanities Center and the UC Humanities Research Institute, hosted by history professor Jon Wiener.
‘This is the single most important book about Los Angeles,’ Wiener said, propping a copy of ‘Quartz’ on the podium. ‘It talks about power and the different ways it is exercised, from the slums to the middle class white homeowners. … [Davis’] writing is of cool passion, about greed, megalomania and corruption
