Reeling From the Rose Parade

‘My momma always said, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” This line, from the movie ‘Forest Gump,’ is probably one of the most well-known in movie history and it accurately sums up my experience at Go West!, an event where participants help decorate floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade, then stay to watch the parade.
The event began the day before New Year’s Eve, when I woke up at five in the morning to get ready to decorate the floats. Getting up that early was quite a difference from waking up at one in the afternoon, something I had done all throughout winter break. Despite the early hour, I felt full of energy and nervousness. I had never decorated floats before and I wanted it to go off without a hitch.
Having arrived at the decorating site, the group I was with was assigned to work on the Western Asset float.
The task given to us was said to be one of the most important jobs on the floats. We were to stick orchid flowers along the bottom of the float
