Every once in a while, a particular city or state enjoys a tremendously successful sports year.
Last year, the University of Florida won national titles in both basketball and football. The basketball title was a rare repeat college national championship. The football team upset seemingly invincible Ohio State, in a match up that for me brought back chilling memories of the 2005 Rose Bowl game.
Most of you may not even know, but UC Irvine had a historic sports year last year. We were awarded the Division 1-AAA, which is made up of schools without a football program, Sports School of the Year. Our baseball, women’s golf, men’s volleyball teams all experienced postseason success and brought this school glory that few even know about.
In 2002, Los Angeles enjoyed one of its best sports years in history. Not many people realized it.
