Giving Thanks to UCI’s Top Athletes and Other Stuff that’s Good

This fall has been quite eventful for the UC Irvine sports program. The vast majority of Anteater squads have enjoyed successful seasons. Obviously, it would have been nice to see the men’s soccer team win more than one of its last 15 games after winning five in a row to start the year and, yes, everyone would have loved to see the women’s team advance deep into the Big West Conference tournament, but UCI fans still have much to be thankful for.
The speedy resilience of the women’s volleyball team along with men’s water polo and women’s soccer has surpassed virtually everyone’s preseason expectations. We’ve witnessed the development of a star senior water polo demon who appears primed for the 2008 Olympics, and the abundance of young players has already embedded stability in several UCI teams.
Last year, it wasn’t the teams that played in the fall that were responsible for UCI being named the Division-1-AAA School of the Year, but this year, it’s the fall teams that have already made a strong push for UCI to reclaim that distinction for the second straight year.
So with this barrage of optimism, here are the top five players/things the UCI sports program should be most thankful for.
