It’s been more than a decade since trip-hop’s finest—Portishead—released a full-length studio album. Even though the long wait has kept eager fans in the same somber mood as singer Beth Gibbons, its third record fittingly titled “Third” is the bands most self-reflective and organic-feeling work to date. It moves away from the minimalist samples and programmed beats that producer Geoff Barrow had to search for. Instead, the band resorted to recording to its own samples to convey its laments as authentically and personably as possible. suggesting “Third” as the most Portishead-sounding yet.
Suggested Listening: “Silence,” “The Rip,” “Plastic” and “Machine Gun.”
Album out 4/29.
