UCI Baseball to Host Ants vs. ’Eaters Series Nov. 19-21
The UCI baseball team will be starting an inter-squad series, which will be used to preview the 2010 team. The first match up will take place on Nov. 19 at the Anteater Ballpark and will be sponsored by El Cholo Restaurant, who will hand out free tacos. UCI Athletics will be giving out free Home Run Hankies to the first 100 fans that come to the game. These hankies are good for 10 percent off at El Cholo during the 2010 baseball season after all UCI baseball home games. The game is absolutely free and open to the public, so come out and get an early glimpse of the UCI baseball team. Support your nationally acclaimed UCI baseball team as they attempt to make a third straight NCAA Tournament.
Men’s Water Polo Continues Exciting Conference Action
The No. 7 UC Irvine men’s water polo team defeated No. 10 UC Santa Barbara in a close match at Campus Pool on Saturday. UCI improved their overall record to 15-9 and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Gauchos fell to 12-12 and 1-5 in conference play.
The Anteaters held on for a 9-7 victory, squashing a late surge by the Gauchos. Cole Bielskis led the Anteaters with three goals and Brandon Johnson added two goals. UCI goalie Matt Johnson had eight saves.
On Sunday, the Anteaters returned home to take on the Waves of Pepperdine University. The Anteaters and Waves kept neck and neck the entire time, battling back and forth to end the regulation period 13-13. A Johnson goal put UCI up 14-13 after the first overtime period, but Pepperdine’s Christian Cardey answered in the second overtime.
The teams would remain tied until the fifth overtime, when Cardey struck again, lifting Pepperdine over UCI 15-14.
Cross Country Competes in NCAA West Regional
The UC Irvine men’s cross country team finished in 18th place at the NCAA West Regional in Springfield, OR last Saturday. The women’s squad finished 21st. Stanford won the men’s title with 27 points and Washington captured the women’s title.
UCI’s Brett Matejka placed 86th with a time of 32:54.48 and Rex Nelson finished 91st at the 32:57.90 mark. Redshirt freshman Chlloe Fata led UCI with a 76th place finish of 22:39.04. The next UCI best finish belonged to Melissa Mead who came in 103rd place.
